Stone, Light, and 12,060 Tiny Pieces: The LEGO Sagrada Família Miniature I’ve Been Waiting For
First Impressions in Miniature
Every once in a while, a LEGO announcement lands directly in the overlap between several of my obsessions. Architecture. Miniatures. Complicated construction. Tiny pieces being asked to perform jobs their designers probably never imagined.
Then LEGO announced Sagrada Família 21065.
I was doomed immediately.
The upcoming LEGO Architecture set contains 12,060 pieces, measures more than 24 inches (62 cm) tall, and arrives globally on November 1, 2026, with a U.S. price of $799.99. LEGO describes it as its largest building set to date by piece count.

I will absolutely be buying one. Once it arrives, I’m planning a full build post here on Small World Miniatures along with a speed-build video so you can watch several thousand tan LEGO elements gradually turn into Barcelona while I slowly lose access to my dining table.
For now, I want to spend some time with the official images, the architecture, and the remarkably clever choices hiding inside this set.
Because Antoni Gaudí happens to be my favorite architect.
So, yes. LEGO knew exactly where to aim.
Why Gaudí Has Had My Attention for Years
Gaudí occupies a strange and wonderful place in architectural history. His work can feel ancient from one angle, futuristic from another, and strangely biological when you stand underneath it. That last part has always fascinated me.
A Gaudí building appears to grow. Columns split like tree trunks. Surfaces ripple. Stone bends visually even when you know perfectly well that stone has several strong opinions about bending. Ornament crawls across façades like geology developing a personality.
The Sagrada Família takes all of those ideas and turns the volume knob until it snaps off.
Gaudí drew heavily from natural forms and from his observations of light. Inside the basilica, the branching structural columns create the sensation of standing beneath a forest canopy. Those columns use complex double-twist geometry to distribute loads while pulling your eye upward. Openings in the vaults allow light to filter through much like sunlight between leaves.
That relationship between nature, structure, and ornament is one of the big reasons his architecture works so well in miniature.
You can reduce a conventional building until windows become squares and columns become lines. Gaudí gives you another vocabulary entirely: cones, branches, spirals, perforations, clustered towers, bursts of color.
LEGO pieces are surprisingly good at that vocabulary.
And looking at set 21065, I get the feeling somebody on the design team has been waiting a long time to prove it.
Before Gaudí, There Was Another Sagrada Família
One of my favorite things about the real basilica is that its history already sounds like the beginning of an architectural epic.
Construction began in 1882 under architect Francisco de Paula del Villar. His proposal followed a fairly conventional neo-Gothic language with pointed windows, buttresses, flying buttresses, and a tall bell tower. Villar left the project the following year after disagreements surrounding the work and materials. A young Antoni Gaudí took over in 1883.
Gaudí inherited foundations and portions of the crypt.
Then he began transforming the project.
The building grew increasingly ambitious, developing into the highly symbolic composition we recognize today. In 1914, Gaudí stopped accepting other architectural work and devoted himself entirely to the Sagrada Família. He continued until his death in 1926.
Only one of the apostle bell towers had been completed by that point.
Gaudí understood that the building would outlive him, so models became extremely important to the project. He used physical plaster studies to investigate geometry and structural relationships. That fact feels especially appropriate here: more than a century later, many of us are going to understand his building through another physical model, this time made from injection-molded plastic.
History has a sense of humor.
The story also continued through generations of architects. Gaudí's disciple Domènec Sugranyes took over following his death. The Spanish Civil War brought devastating damage to Gaudí's workshop in 1936, destroying drawings and smashing many plaster models. Architect Francesc de Paula Quintana later helped resume construction using surviving material and reconstructions based on photographs and published drawings.
Today, Jordi Faulí serves as head architect of the basilica and continues the long process of translating Gaudí's surviving design principles into a functioning twenty-first-century construction project.
That succession matters. The Sagrada Família has always been both a building and a conversation across generations.
Now LEGO has joined the conversation with 12,060 very small words.
The LEGO Architect Behind the LEGO Basilica
The LEGO model was designed by Rok Žgalin Kobe, a Master Model Designer at the LEGO Group who is also a trained architect with a PhD focused on the relationship between sites and contemporary architectural expression.
That architectural background becomes pretty obvious once you study this thing.
Kobe says he had wanted to tackle the Sagrada Família since joining LEGO, while the smaller scale traditionally associated with LEGO Architecture made it difficult to capture the building's monumentality. The success of the much larger LEGO Architecture Notre-Dame de Paris 21061 helped establish a format where Sagrada Família could finally receive enough physical space and pieces.
His research went far beyond staring at photographs on a computer. He traveled to Barcelona, spent two days studying the basilica, and climbed both the Nativity and Passion towers. That firsthand architectural experience informed the finished model.
I love that approach.
You can understand dimensions from drawings. You understand a building's personality by walking through it.
Kobe also designed LEGO's Notre-Dame model, which follows the historical development of that cathedral during the building process. He has carried that same idea much further with Sagrada Família.
Instead of assembling the entire model as horizontal layers that gradually rise together, builders progress through major architectural sections in an order inspired by the actual basilica's development.
That makes the instruction book part construction manual and part architectural history lesson.
Which is precisely my kind of evening.
A Guided Tour Through the Official Images
Start with the silhouette.
From a distance, the model gets the most important thing right: vertical rhythm. Towers rise in clustered groups, smaller pinnacles crowd their bases, and the central composition climbs dramatically toward the tower of Jesus Christ. The warm tan palette gives everything the appearance of carved stone while small red, gold, green, and white accents flash at the tower tops.
Move down toward the lower façades and the density becomes almost absurd. Tiny arches sit beside narrow vertical recesses. Little circular elements become carved rosettes. Repeating grille pieces form bands of architectural texture. Cones and spikes turn every roofline into a miniature mountain range. There are areas where I have to stare for a few seconds before my brain switches from "cathedral" back to "LEGO."
Around the entrance, the model compresses enormous architecture into a handful of recognizable gestures: angled supports, deep portals, statuary, pointed roof forms, and strips of dark paving. Tiny green shrubs at the base are especially useful because they immediately establish scale. Suddenly those tan towers feel enormous.
Then there is the interior.
The official photographs of the nave may be my favorite images from the entire release. Slim columns repeat into the distance beneath branching supports, while transparent elements glow orange and red along one side and blue along the other. The polished LEGO floor catches those colors and doubles them in reflection. The scene actually manages to evoke the sensation of Gaudí's interior forest.

That is quite a trick for a material famous for hurting when stepped on.
The overhead image reveals another side of the model: planning. Beneath all of the exterior spectacle sits a highly organized floor plan. The nave reads clearly as a long processional space, with repeated columns creating an ordered structural grid. The plan is an especially good reminder that Gaudí's exuberance grows from disciplined geometry.

The Real Building and the LEGO Model: Where They Meet
The strongest similarity begins with the overall hierarchy of the towers.
Gaudí designed 18 towers: twelve representing the apostles, four for the Evangelists, one for the Virgin Mary, and the tallest for Jesus Christ. The central grouping forms a rising symbolic pyramid above the crossing.
LEGO captures that upward movement beautifully. From almost every official exterior angle, your eye travels through progressively taller forms toward the center.
The interior structural idea receives equally serious attention.
Kobe used LEGO minifigure candle elements stacked upside down to create rigid column assemblies that reference the branching structural system of the real basilica. The façades can also be removed so the completed interior remains visible.
Then comes the light.
The real Sagrada Família uses color according to orientation. The eastern Nativity side receives cooler blues associated with morning light. The western Passion side uses reds and oranges that intensify the sunset.
LEGO reproduces that relationship with more than 500 transparent pieces. Cool colors occupy one side of the miniature nave, warm colors the other.
That may be the smartest translation in the whole model.
Architecture at this scale cannot reproduce every sculpture, inscription, joint, and curve. Light carries an enormous amount of the atmosphere instead.
Where LEGO Has to Speak Its Own Language
Gaudí had stone, ceramics, glass, iron, geometry, gravity, and a construction timeline spanning generations.
Rok Žgalin Kobe gets ABS plastic and a rectangular connection system.
Fair fight.
The LEGO version translates the basilica through repetition and part substitution. Curves become stepped arrangements. Sculptural stonework becomes dense fields of tiny elements. Fine ornament becomes texture.
And apparently the design team decided that the existing LEGO parts catalog was challenge enough.
No new elements were created specifically for this set.
That detail may be my favorite fact about 21065.
The model contains 533 radiator grille elements, 100 conical horn pieces originally associated with unicorn horns, and 42 small statues distributed across the architecture.
A unicorn horn becoming a Sagrada Família pinnacle feels oddly appropriate. Gaudí probably would have appreciated the resourcefulness.
The simplification is especially visible on the façades. The real Nativity façade is an almost hallucinatory landscape of sculpture and organic ornament. LEGO converts that depth into clusters, projections, openings, and repeated surface patterns. Your eye fills in the missing information.
That is exactly what strong miniature design should do.
A model chooses the details that make recognition inevitable.
One Important Difference: The LEGO Basilica Gets Ahead of Reality
The real Sagrada Família remains an active construction project.
In February 2026, crews installed the upper arm of the cross on the tower of Jesus Christ, completing the exterior of the basilica's tallest central tower. Interior work on that structure is continuing, and other portions of the greater project remain underway.
The LEGO model presents a more complete architectural composition, including the Glory façade and the central towers as part of the finished display.
So builders get an unusual privilege: we can hold a version of the intended architectural whole while the full-size building is still evolving in Barcelona.
Gaudí's building has spent 144 years moving from model to reality.
LEGO has now moved it back into model form.
That circle is wonderfully satisfying.
How It Compares with Other Monumental LEGO Architecture Sets
The clearest relative is Notre-Dame de Paris 21061.
That model contains 4,383 pieces and measures about 13 inches high. It also features a removable roof and interior architecture, and its building sequence follows important phases of the cathedral's historical construction.
Sagrada Família takes that historical-build concept and triples the piece count.
Notre-Dame's visual language is disciplined Gothic repetition: buttresses, rose windows, pitched roofs, towers. Sagrada Família becomes a much denser exercise in vertical clusters, strange geometry, tiny projections, and organic texture.
Then there is the gigantic LEGO Icons Eiffel Tower 10307.
At 10,001 pieces and nearly five feet tall, the Eiffel Tower remains dramatically taller. Its construction centers on repeated trusses, structural bracing, platforms, and long stretches of exposed framework. It is also assembled in four major sections inspired by the sequence used to construct the real monument.
Sagrada Família surpasses it in piece count while occupying far less vertical space. Those additional pieces are packed into ornament, walls, towers, chapels, façades, and an interior.
One is a lattice.
The other is a city of architecture compressed onto a base.
And Then There’s My Botanical Garden
I also keep thinking about this set in relation to a much more recent build of mine: LEGO Ideas The Botanical Garden 21353.
I absolutely love that set.
The Botanical Garden has been one of those builds that reminds me why architectural LEGO works so well when the structure creates an atmosphere. Its Victorian-style glasshouse contains three atriums, removable roofs and walls, a spiral staircase, and more than 35 plant species across 3,792 pieces.
The whole thing feels airy and open. Transparent wall panels allow the plants to become the focus, while the architecture frames them.
Sagrada Família approaches transparency from another direction. Its colored transparent pieces create light rather than visual openness. The Botanical Garden lets you look through the architecture. Sagrada Família makes you look into illuminated architecture.
Both sets also share a surprisingly botanical mindset.
One literally fills a greenhouse with trees.
The other turns columns into trees.
After enjoying the Botanical Garden as much as I did, I am especially excited to see how the Sagrada Família handles that relationship between structural repetition, transparency, and organic form at a much larger level of complexity.
My Botanical Garden was a pleasant afternoon among palms.
Sagrada Família appears ready to annex a weekend.
Possibly several.
12,060 Pieces, and Some of Them Are Doing Very Strange Jobs
For miniature artists, the most interesting lesson here may be part vocabulary.
A radiator grille stops being a radiator grille when you repeat it 533 times across a cathedral.
A unicorn horn becomes architecture.
A candle becomes structure.
LEGO calls this set structurally advanced, and the official images suggest a huge amount of sideways building, layered detailing, repeated modules, and unconventional orientation.
That is the same mental exercise I love in miniature making.
You learn to look at an object for its shape rather than its intended use.
A bead becomes a light fixture. Mesh becomes railing. A coffee stirrer becomes trim. LEGO simply formalizes that process with studs.
Set 21065 may end up being a 12,060-piece lesson in seeing familiar shapes differently.

Yes, I have already started thinking about where I am going to put it.
Negotiations with the furniture are ongoing.
What I’ll Be Watching During the Build
When my set arrives, I want to pay close attention to three things.
First, how the structural core develops. I want to see exactly how LEGO handles the transition from a stable rectangular system into all those clustered towers and angled architectural forms.
Second, how repetitive detailing stays interesting. Twelve thousand pieces guarantees repetition. Good LEGO design gives repeated work a rhythm and a purpose. I am curious whether the smaller ornament feels meditative, exhausting, or some entertaining mixture of the two.
Third, the moment the interior lighting colors appear. That finished nave photograph has completely sold me on the interior. I want to see how early those transparent pieces enter the build and how much of their effect survives under ordinary room lighting.
I’ll document all of that in the full build post once the set is released, including close-up photography of the construction techniques and finished model.
And yes, there will be a speed-build video.
Twelve thousand pieces condensed into a few minutes should be extremely satisfying.
My hands may have a different opinion.
Until Next Time in the Small World
LEGO Architecture Sagrada Família 21065 feels unusually well suited to Small World Miniatures because it sits right at the intersection of architecture and model making.
The real basilica began with drawings and physical studies. Gaudí refined complex geometry through models. Generations of architects have continued interpreting that work. Rok Žgalin Kobe then translated the building through thousands of existing LEGO elements, turning stone, structure, symbolism, and stained light into something that can sit on a table.
A very sturdy table, preferably.
I already know this will be one of the biggest LEGO builds I have tackled, and having Gaudí as the subject makes the whole thing considerably more dangerous to my free time. Following my recent Botanical Garden build, I’m ready for another architectural deep dive.
